Gamaret produces wines with a beautiful purple robe, spicy aromas and powerful tannins. It is often used as a blend component. When it is vinified as a monovarietal wine, it is, most of the time, aged in barrels.
An artificial cross between Gamay and Reichensteiner, Gamaret was created in 1970 at the Agroscope research centre in Pully (Switzerland) with the aim of creating a grape variety similar to Gamay, but more resistant and richer in colour. Officially marketed in 1990, it is a brother of Garanoir and Mara. In a quarter-century Gamaret has not only become the fourth red grape variety in Switzerland, but it has also won over producers from Beaujolais (since 2008) and the Aosta Valley (since 1999).
